Pitch Edit: Social Media (Jessica Taylor)

Hello!

The feedback we got for our social media was to make it a page for the artist, and not the group. Taking this advice into consideration, I changed the Twitter and Facebook pages, and then made a separate Instagram account for the artist.

Research for Music Video: Lip Sync Project Evaluation

Hello!

We used the song 'Show Me Love' by The XX. We decided that Heather would be the artist in our actual music video, so we thought it would be great practice for both her and us if she was the artist in this. It would allow her to improve her acting, and also get used to having to sing out loud in public.

To create our lip sync project, we had to film base tracks. Base tracks are when you record a scene, with the whole song playing. This makes editing much easier. Base tracks also give the video more structure. We filmed over 10 base tracks, along with small recordings of flowers and scenery.

One of my favourite angles and base tracks is of Dan, and it was shot by Lily. I love how the trees and look around him, almost framing him. It also adds to the nature feel of the video.

Myself, Dan and Lily all worked together to edit. We tried to stick to what we had been taught in the lesson. We showed the final edit to Louisa and she gave us some feedback:
  • She really liked the shots of the flowers, and the base tracks.
  • Don't cut in the middle of a lyric as it makes the video seem 'off'.
  • Cut to the beat.

Pitch 17: Risk Assessment (Heather Simpson)

RISK ASSESSMENT

1). Travelling to and from the locations with the camera and other equipment, it is expensive  and cannot be broken/stolen.

2) Weather: Check the weather before we head out to film, appropriate clothing and footwear and waterproofs for equipment.

3) Some of the located areas are quite hilly, make sure everyone is in footwear that can grip the ground so no-one looses their footing or 'tumbles'.

4) Camera and equipment must be kept away from water, their are lakes and river near our areas.

5) Make sure no-one gets lost by having designated meeting points for us all to meet at and having our group chat and phone numbers to keep in contact.

Pitch 13: Industry (Jess Taylor)

Hello!

Our chosen record label is Universal Music Group. It is one of the largest music corporations in the world, and also owns the second largest publishing company - Universal Music Publishing Group. It is a subsidiary of Vivendi, a French mass media company, which also owns StudioCanal and Dailymotion. We feel as though our artist being signed to such a large company will give them bigger opportunities, such as more money being invested into them and therefore there is a lot more confidence that they will get recognition. This also allows higher quality products, such as singles and music videos.

Our artist is inspired a lot by Taylor Swift, both personality-wise and fame-wise. We want our artist to be a household name, just like Taylor. Taylor Swift is signed to the independent label 'Big Machine Records' which specializes in country music. Big Machine Records' distributor is Universal Music Group.

Our target audience is teenage girls, who are avid users of the internet and social media. Because of this, our song will be available for internet download and available to listen to online streaming applications, such as Spotify and Pandora. Taylor Swift has not allowed people to stream her music, but she has faced a lot of backlash and controversy because of this, and so we are choosing to stream our song.

Pitch 10: Ancillary Demo Photos (Jess Taylor)

Hello!

These are some photos that Dan took during the holidays, as practice for our ancillary work. They were taken in Stratford, where we plan to film the majority of our music video.

I have posted them to our group Flickr account - group6media - where we also plan to post photos of us behind the scenes, editing and filming.

One of our chosen locations is the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, and so I decided to take some photos of the area. Olympic Park - Jess

Planning: Storyboard Drafting (Behind The Scenes)

Hello!

I'm using adobe audition to help me storyboard. I've put the song into a multitrack project and I've gone through the song and placed a marker at the beginning of every bar (just as you would when editing the actual video).

I'm then, as you can see in the screenshot, changing the labels of all these markers and giving a very very brief description of what shot is going to be happening at each point through the song.

As you may notice - there are some irregularities in where the markers are. This is because we plan to add some variation to the edit and not cut just on every bar.

The corresponds with the more detailed description given on the storyboard I am creating on "Storyboard That".

Pitch 12: Post Production (Lily)

Hey,

Experimenting in PostProduction
In Paramore's music video for their song 'Brick by Brick' they used a highly saturated colour scheme that really brings out the natural colours of autumn, which is a exaggerated effect to the one we want to create towards the end of our video. Although not as strong as Paramore did, we can do this in post production by adding filters or editing the saturation and colours of the original footage before adding it to the sequence.

I tried testing out some of the saturation and selective colouring tools in Photoshop, this is a example of my experimentation with one of the photos I took of a potential location.

We want to have roughly at least 5-6 base tracks, excluding repeated takes in the same location.
1st - Tracking shot of our artist, varying from a mid shot to mid close ups.
2nd- is a high angle shot looking down at the artist standing at the top of the steps in the Olympic park.
3rd- Close of artist expression, surrounded by leaves.
4th- Low angle shot of dancers on a hill.
5th- Same dancers different location
6th- Shallow depth of focus, slightly lower angle, artist in 1/3 of the frame.

We want to introduce the sequence in slow motion, returning to real time when the lyrics starts, also at certain key points during the sequence. Such as during some of the dancing base tracks, and when the beat of the music slows down.

Pitch 7: Costume (Heather Simpson)

How many costume changes will you have?

Different costume per location.

How does you choice of costume mirror costumes found in similar videos or artists?

Our inspiration of our new artist are Gabriell Aplin. She is a strong independent female artists who doesn't  objectify or wear provocative clothing in her videos. Her clothing will be simple yet fashionable, heeled boot snap dhighwaisted jeans and simple colour schemes like RED, BLACK and WHITE and autumn colours such as a blend between ORANGES and GREENS.

What sort of costume would your audience expect your artist to wear?

Taking into consideration the styles of similar artists like Gabrielle Aplin.

Their YouGov Profiles suggest a variety of different brands. Making sure our audience is happy we will keep out fashion ideas simple. simple colour schemes and jeans are a must, simple designed tops, jumpers and coats for the autumn weather and heeled boots to give everything a dynamic lift. We will make sure that we stick to the general feel of what taylor and Gabrielle wear for example we are using simple makeup like Gabrielle but having the red lipstick of taylor as our signature look.

Research: Previous student video.

Hiya!

I like the use of the violin as a prop. It sets the scene, adds emotion and looks like its actually being played.

The closeup of the violin being played add a realism to the music video.

I really like this side view of the main charater through the bars in the door. It is so effective and really works.

The closeups of the actor lip syncing are generic music videos features increasing authenticity and making it look real.

Research: Short Summary (Laura Mulvey Theory)

Research:Carol Vernallis

Hiya!

CAROL VERNALLIS THEORY:

Carol vernallis observed the edits in music videos. The usual rule of continuity was broken so the audiences attention is grabbed by what is on the screen. Edits were obvious to draw the audiences attention and jump cuts were used much more frequently. Base tracks were used to give the videos structure as well as the camera moving continuously in time with the music.

Research: What is the function of a music video?

Hiya!

To summarise:

Music videos are to-

1. Promote the artist
2. To entertain
3. For Symbolism
4. Evoke emotion from the audience
5. For representation

The shot types go from close ups of the members with their instruments to wide shots of the whole band to simply just the lead singer, Matt Healy, close up.
